I brought my kids to the DV musical 9 to 5 yesterday, and it was spectacular truly....the entire cast BROUGHT it.....each of their parts suiting them so fully, and the chemistry of the characters palpable.....but there was also so much more going on in the story of the play.....it had deep women empowerment themes.......the themes of women in the workplace.....and competing against men, and trying to be mothers amid the pressure of the workplace, and the three main characters each having a challenging road in the company as a secretary......one recently left by her husband.....no work experience, and being thrust into learning to take care of herself......a story I hear so often in my coaching, and it makes me feel so wild for the women that this affects....the other character, our friend's daughter, who played a widow.....making her way with her son, and figuring out how to make her way.....and then the Dolly character, who was adorable by the way, with her country twang and Dolly sparkle, she most definitely epitomized the Dolly Parton energy, and she had a husband that was crazy about her at home, but she was being objectified by the boss, and shunned by the other women initially because of her pretty exterior, and vibrant ways.....and they all thought she was having an affair with the boss......which she wasn't......but through the themes that played out, that women face, all of them done in a very playful way.....there was power underneath.....and absolute truth.....and some of it made me emotional, due to resonating with it so fully......I got a little teary during one of the powerful songs that the single gal sang, about making her way, and rising above her circumstance.....seeing a couple in front of me, and the woman laid her head on her boyfriend's shoulder, so protected and safe, and the reality of my not having a soft place to land now in this chapter- hitting me in one powerful moment, and maybe not ever have I truly felt that......always carrying heavy weight....and there are so many women that are now hustling like men......being the breadwinner, and the sole provider of their household.....and while I personally feel fully able to do so, it comes with a heavy pressure.....one I do not think of often....I just do....one foot in front of the other until the end of the month finds me.......but once in awhile it hits me.....and again there are a couple of women I see out there, facing divorce......having a wayward husband, that was the sole provider.....and they are held hostage by money....and having been a stay at home mom.....and now are at a loss as to how they will make their way for themselves and their kids.....and it makes me hopping mad.......and it is so unfair and heartbreaking.....and a huge problem, and maybe more than ever with the cost of living being what it is......but this play was timely.....and relevant.....and just done so so well.....the talent in the high school is amazing....I hope Mads finds her way there one day....she sings like a little angel...she has a beautiful voice, and may just find herself on that stage one day, doing the thing:) Bravo to the cast of 9 to 5! You nailed it:)
